We are proud to share this great Shark led community project!
The U18A and U9B Barrie Sharks have partnered up to continue the She Shoots She Saves Plays it Forward campaign, which raises awareness about cardiac arrest and the importance of public access to AEDs.
Each year, there are approximately 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Canada, with only a 10% survival rate. However, when an AED is administered within 4 minutes, survival chances increase to 60-80%
The campaign is inspired by a heroic act from a 17-year-old female hockey player. While timekeeping at her father's pickup hockey game, she saw the goalie collapse. Without hesitation, she began CPR and called for the AED, which was on-site. Using the AED, she helped save the goalie’s life, demonstrating the critical importance of having AEDs available in public spaces. Since the campaign's launch in 2020, over $65,000 has been raised, and 9 outdoor AED SaveStations have been placed in local communities, including outdoor hockey rinks and parks.
The U18A and U9B Barrie Sharks aim to continue building a Cardiac Safe Community by raising funds through their crowdfunding page, with all funds going toward the placement of an additional outdoor AED SaveStation.
