U22-AA Barrie Jr. Sharks - Head Coach: Ed Mauro

Ed Mauro has been the head coach of the Barrie Jr. Sharks since the 2018-19 season. He has dedicated over 20 years to coaching at all levels and age groups, with a focus on creating a team-first environment and winning culture. Ed’s attention to detail and dedication to player development has led to multiple league and tournament championships and an OMHA Championship.  Ed was drafted by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and has been a head instructor at Can Am Hockey School for 19 years.  His goal is to help his players get to the next level.

2021-2022 U18-AA Sharks - Head Coach: Marten Nagel

Marten Nagel has over 30 years of coaching experience at all levels, for both boys and girls. Marten has coached with our Sharks teams for 6 years - including as head coach of our Midget A team (2019-20), and Midget BB team (2018-19). Marten has also served as a hockey association executive for 10 years (including as President and Technical Director) and is a level 3C referee with nearly 15 years of officiating experience.

Marten Nagel will lead a U18-AA team that will be highly integrated with our Jr. Sharks U22-AA program, to push our high performance players to reach their full potential and prepare them for the next step on their hockey journey.

2021-2022 U15-AA Sharks - Head Coach: Duane Eldridge

In 2021-2022, Duane Eldridge will return for his second straight season as coach of our U15-AA team. Coach Eldridge has over 20 years of coaching and player development experience, that has included positions at the Novice A, Atom AA, Peewee AA, Bantam AA, and Intermediate AA levels. Duane led our Barrie Jr. Sharks (Intermediate AA) team from 2014 through 2018, during which time he helped over 20 players achieve their goal of moving on to play competitive USPORTS/NCAA hockey in Canada and the United States. Duane also has experience developing younger players when he was previously head coach of our Sharks Bantam AA team from 2010-2012, and was an assistant coach at the Ontario Winter Games in 2011.

Duane is passionate about player development and he has a proven history of assessing the player skills, drafting team and individual development plans, and successfully executing these plans to help players achieve their goals. His priority for the Bantam AA team will be to help 2006 and 2007-born players to continue developing the skills necessary to succeed at the elite competitive level, and to prepare them for the next step in their hockey careers.

2021-2022 U13-AA Sharks - Head Coach: Mike Van Berkel

Mike Van Berkel has 13+ years coaching hockey at the advanced competitive levels, and is excited to return to lead our u13 AA Sharks for the a second straight season in 2021-2022. Mike has been a coach with the Barrie Sharks for the past 5 seasons, holding head coach and assistant coach roles with both the Atom AA and Novice B Sharks. Previous to joining the Sharks, Mike coached boys AA/AAA level hockey for 8 seasons, winning many league and tournament championships along the way.

Mike’s commitment to individual player development has been the key to success for the teams he has led, as he believes strongly that winning is a bi-product of team and player development.  Mike brings a unique mix of experience in both elite level hockey and national and varsity level rugby, which he uses to grow and advance young athletes.  Mike aims to develop the “whole athlete”, focusing on not only hockey skills, but competitiveness, discipline, and sportsmanship/citizenship.

2021-2022 U11-AA Sharks - Head Coach Steve Fagan

Steve Fagan has 9 seasons of experience as a hockey head coach, including 6 seasons coaching female hockey teams with the Orillia Hawks. Steve has led U11-aged players to high levels of success in the past (with his older daughters) including a Lower Lakes Female Hockey League Division Championship in 2019 2020, and an Ontario Provincial Championship with the Atom B Orilla Hawks in 2017.With 4 children who all enjoy multiple sports Steve has long been an active member of the sports community in Orillia, volunteering with or leading 19 different teams in the past 8 years.

Steve believes first and foremost in creating a fun, positive environment to foster a life-long love of hockey. In the 2021-2022 season, Steve will bring this positive approach to a high-performance program designed to not only continue developing the skills of the exceptional young players selected to our U11-AA team, but to also grow their potential, instill confidence and encourage their love of the game.
